Oxford Circus, London
Really Useful Theatre Company
Grade II Listed
Two powered spider access platforms with operators
Having hosted the Royal Variety Performance a record 40 times, as well as several other world renowned musicals such as Cats and Joseph, The London Palladium is arguably the UK’s best known theatre. The building itself is a work of art both inside and out, and it has had Grade II listed building status since 1960.
In January of 2016, following the traditional Christmas rush, the theatre’s estate manager decided an inspection of the ornate plaster ceiling was required as part of the building’s on-going maintenance cycle. As this meant closing the theatre and the inevitable loss of income, it was imperative that the inspection was completed as quickly as possible.
With time being of the essence, the management turned to Rapid Platforms to hire the access equipment to get the job done. Two powered spider access MEWPs (mobile elevated working platforms) with operators were supplied, one with a 29 metre working height and the other with 23 metres.
These machines were selected because with their extended reach the entire ceiling could be inspected without repositioning them. This meant work could proceed faster, and with less disruption to the theatre’s interior layout.
Both machines were up and working within an hour of arriving on site and the management were delighted that the inspection was concluded on time.
